Revise: Major Posterior Muscles of the Human Body

There are around 640 named muscles in the human body - in addition to thousands of smaller (un-named) muscles.

Knowledge of muscle structure and familarisation with the major muscles of the body is an essential part of training in many therapies - such as Massage, Aromatherapy, Accupuncture, Shiatsu, and many others.

There are several key pieces of information that one may be required to memorize about each muscle on the syllabus of a massage or other therapy course. These may include the muscle's:

Position / Location in the Body; Origin; Insertion; Action.

This page is concerned with the location on the body of the muscles taught to therapists taking First-Level Courses.

Posterior Muscle Diagram

The following diagram illustrates the positions of some of the major posterior muscles.

These particular muscles are chosen because they are required knowledge for many courses in
Massage and Body work (including ITEC Courses).
