Three of Wands

The Tarot Suit of Wands

The "Threes" in the Tarot Deck generally suggest a family unit of mother, father and child. This represents the resolution of the tension inherent in the number "two" (to due to opposition of oppposite extremes). However, this numerical "theme" is one of the least apparent of such themes as the "Threes" vary widely from suit to suit.

The theme of the Three of Wands is "Waiting". Many decks illustrate a figure in a pensive pose. He/she may be waiting, anticipating, contemplating, or simply reflecting on a situation. This is one of the those cards for which the reader usually has much symbolism from which to discern the direction of emphasis of this card in the specific situation concerned.

Generally this card may indicate the benefits of thoughtful planning, preparation (if need be), and patience where appropriate.

Keywords summarising the possible meanings of this card include:

  • Activity out of choice (rather than necessity)
  • Challenges sought - but from a position of ongoing security
  • "Ships Coming In" - i.e. receiving the fruits of ones efforts and investments
  • Strength of Character; Stability
  • Successful business ventures
  • Understanding of situations and requirements for growth.
