Seven of Swords

The Tarot Suit of Swords

The "Sevens" in the Tarot Deck are associated with experimentation, courage, and risks. The nature of the risk may vary and can be positive or negative.

In the case of the Seven of Swords, this is usually taken as a negative card - with connotations of sneaky and deceitful actions. This card has several titles/themes (in different decks), including "change of conciousness", "unstable effort", and "self-sabotage".

The Seven of Swords in the Robin Wood Deck is especially sinister in appearance and is said to depict a thief, a dark shadowy figure who appears to be stealing the seven swords underneath this cloak ... escaping from an encampment by climbing over a wall. This may imply a crisis of personal honour, or taking risks within oneself.
This is not a comfortable card to appear in a freading but it can provide useful advice. If there are untrustworthy or weak elements around us, perhaps it is better that we recognise them.

Keywords summarising the possible meanings of this card include:

  • Betrayal
  • Deception - something to hide
  • Spying on others - for personal, business, state, or other purposes
  • Stealth
  • Thief.
