Knight of Cups Tarot Card
The Tarot
Suit of Cups

The Tarot Suit of Cups is associated with the suit of Hearts in standard playing cards.
The "Cups" depicted on tarot cards are usually in the style of goblets, ceremonial, or communion cups (as above). There are meanings associated with each of the suits in a tarot deck, as well as the more specific interpretations associated with each individual card - and yet more precise meanings pertaining to particular cards in particular locations within spreads.
The suit of cups is associated with the element of water. It is also associated with the season of autumn (or "fall" in U.S. English), and with the direction "West".
Cups concern emotions, love, romance, range of emotions, mastery of emotions and feelings, and "gut reactions" that call upon our intuitive as opposed to intellectual development.
The "Knights" in
the tarot deck may also be known by other names depending on the deck
used. For example, the Golden Dawn Tarot Deck includes "Princes" and the Shapeshifter's
Tarot includes "Warriors" (not specifically male or female) in
place of the "Knights" of
the Rider-Waite and Robin Wood decks.
All tarot Court Cards may be interpreted as referring to a person - the card itself
including information to identify the individual. Alternatively they may be interpreted symbolically, in which case "Knights" are
often understood to represent restless energy, movement including e.g. travel, courage or a quest for knowledge. These indications might apply to the querent (another word for the "sitter", or person
receiving the reading) or to another person or situation.
The element of the Knights is "Air". Knights may indicate teenagers
- heralding much change, constant activity, yet with a young person's optimism
and determination.
The theme of the Knight of Cups is that of learning to love - personally
and unconditionally. However, as with most things - this may not be easy.
The Robin
Wood Knight of Cups literally "wears his heart on his sleeve",
which may imply vunerability.
When the Knight of Cups tarot Court Card appears in a spread to identify a person to the
sitter then the characteristics it conveys include: Young men, dark brown
hair, grey or blue eyes, the astrological
sign of pisces.
Note this is not always the purpose
of the appearance of a Court Card in a spread and not all of the above
characteristics need apply - the readers intuition will guide him/her
to mention only any that are relevant.
Some readers interpret the Knight of Cups Tarot Card as a "Knight in Shining Armour" especially
when the sitter is a female seeking love or a new romantic relationship.
Keywords and phrases for some of the possible interpretations of the Knight of Cups Tarot Card include:
- Creativity
- Devotion to a cause or purpose
- Inspiration
- New lover
- New opportunity
What about the Knight of Cups Reversed ?
Some interpretations of the meaning of the Knight of Cups reversed include:
- Jealousy, susceptible to mood swings, unpredictable in love
- Weakness, possibly due to immaturity
- Risk of trickery and deception, possibly even fraud
Note: Tarot readings may be either with all cards upright or with the orientation as well as the order of the cards in the deck shuffled so that cards may appear either upright or reversed (reversed = 'inverted', upside-down). Reversed cards do not necessarily have the exact opposite meaning of the same card upright. The distinction between the upright and reversed meaning of a tarot card can be subtle. The effect of reversing each card is different.
