E180 is a food additive approved by the European Union
(EU).
It is used as a synthetic colouring agent in food and drink products.
The common name for E180 is Litholrubine BK.
It may also be referred to as Pigment Rubine.
E180 is red coloured azo dye, which is insoluble in
cold water, but becomes slightly soluble in warmer water.
Individuals with intolerance to salicylates may also find that they
are intolerant to E180, due to the colouring being an
azo dye. E180 may also worsen asthma and have a negative
affect on those who suffer from rhinitis or the skin disease urticaria.
The additive is banned in Australia.
