E965(i) and E695(ii) are food additives approved by the EU (European
Union).
They are used as sweeteners in food and drink products.
The common names for E965(i) and E965(ii) are maltitol and maltitol
syrup, respectively.
Maltitol is a sugar alcohol which has a lower calorie content than
sugar.
E965 may have a laxative effect and has been known
to cause gastric irritation. Unlike sugar, E965 does
not promote tooth decay and has less effect on blood glucose levels
in the body, making it more suitable
for diabetics. This sweetener is generally recognised as a safe
additive.
