approved by the European Union (EU).
It is a natural acid that
acts as an antimicrobial
preservative
The common name for E285 is borax.
It may also be known as sodium tetraborate or borax
decahydrate.
E285 is the sodium salt of boric acid. As well as occurring
naturally,
E285 can also be produced commercially from boron. It
often acts as the source of minerals used in vitamin
and
mineral products.
E285 is also used in the glass and textiles industry and in the tanning
of leather.
E285 is thought to be an irritant to the
skin and eyes. It is also considered harmful by inhalation and ingestion,
and may cause
damage
to
the
reproduction
system.
E285 is banned in the United States.
