| E284 is a food additive
approved by the European Union (EU). It is a natural acid that acts
as an antimicrobial
preservative, mostly for pharmaceuticals, as well as a bleaching agent.
This chemical also has uses as an antiseptic and insecticide.
The common name for E284 is boric acid.
It may also be known as boracic acid, sassolite (when
in mineral form), or borofax.
As well as occurring naturally, E284 can also be produced commercially
from boron.
This chemical is used as an ant poison in Australia.
E284 may cause reproductive disorders and is an irritant,
which may be fatal if ingested inappropriately.

Meat, fish and dairy products.
