Threonine is an essential amino acid.
Amino acids generally are defined in the column on the right.

Of the two types of amino acid, there are:
* Those that can be synthesized by the body itself, and
* Those that (are necessary for healthy growth or maintenance of the body) but cannot be produced by the body itself.
Threonine is one of those that are necessary but cannot be produced within the body. These are called "Essential Amino Acids".

Threonine is involved in many physiological processes. These contribute to helping to maintain sustainable balances of proteins in the body and also supporting cardiovascular, liver, central nervous, and immune system function. Threonine also helps to keep connective tissues and muscles strong and elastic, and to maintain strong bones and tooth enamel.

The molecular formula of threonine is: C4H9NO3
