Flexor Digitorum Longus

Get a new perspective - with a Hot Air Balloon Flight. Fly from locations all over the UK.

The Flexor Digitorum Longus are a pair of muscles located in each of the lower-legs of the human body.

To test your knowledge: look at the image opposite and decide which muscle(s) you think are the flexor digitorum longus, then click on the image to check if you were correct - and for the labels of all the other muscles illustrated.

Further information about the flexor digitorum longus is summarised below:

Point(s) of Origin:

Upper posterior surface of tibia.

Point(s) of Insertion:

Distal phalanx of 4 outer toes.

Action(s):

Plantarflexes the foot and toes; inverts the foot.

Note that a "flexor" is any muscle that causes the bending of a limb or another part of the body, such as a hand.

This may be particularly interesting study/revision material for students following courses in Massage, Reflexology and similar courses because these generally require a good basic knowledge of the muscular structures of the arms, legs, hands and feet.
