The term calmative is
sometimes used to refer to agents (e.g. natural substances
such as
herbs, oils, or
essences, or conventional pharmaceutical drugs) that act as a sedative.
This is not a standard medical term and therefore is not included in
some of the leading medical / biological dictionaries. However, the term
"sedative" is included and is generally defined as a drug/agent that
has a calming effect, relives anxiety, tension, and distress.
This Section is about terms
that describe the actions (effects) of both pharmaceutical drugs
and natural remedies, e.g. astringent, decongestive, etc.. A full
list of terms defined in this section is on the left-hand-side of
each page.
For information about specific oils, herbs, and
remedies that may have properties including some of the actions mentioned
in this
section, see other parts of this website.
