The Corrugator supercilii is a small, pyramidal muscle of facial expression
located at the inner extremity of the eyebrow and beneath the occipito-frontalis
and orbicularis palpebrarum muscles on each side of the face.
The points of origin and insertion, and the action of the corrugator
supercilii muscles are tabulated below:
Origin |
Insertion |
Action |
Superciliary ridge of the frontal bone. |
Deep surface of the skin opposite the middle of the orbital
arch. |
Affects facial expression by moving skin tissues in the area
around the corrugator supercilii muscles just above the eyes. |

This is one of the muscles of the head, neck, and face that is included
on the syllabus of many courses in Indian
Head Massage. As this is an increasingly popular therapy we have
added several revision pages that may be helpful to students of Indian
Head Massage. See for example, the page about Skeletal
Structures of the Head and Neck.
See the Revision page about Facial
Muscles to view the location
of the corrugator supercilii muscle.
Note that this page consists of an interactive (rather than a simply
labelled) diagram, so you'll have to test yourself by guessing which
muscle is the corrugator until you
find the correct label. It's a fun way to learn !
Note that the corrugator supercilii (featured on this page)
is not to
be confused with the corrugator cutis ani, which is located around
the anus. |
