The term opthalmitis is a
general term that refers to inflammation of the eye.
(Recall that the suffix -itis usually indicates "inflammation" of the
preceding anatomical part of the body, and the prefix ophthal- refers
to the eye.)
However, more specific terms are often used in order to refer to the
specific part of the eye that is inflammed.
