The atlas bone is located in the neck and is significant because it is the upper-most vertebra, hence the point at which the spine meets the head/skull.
(It is therefore obvious in the upper of the two diagrams to the right.)

Location:
The first (upper-most) vertebra.

Function(s):
Supports and balances the head.
Allows flexion and extension of the head.
