The left ventricle is one of the main chambers of
the heart. It is the lower chamber located on the left-hand side of the
body (see the diagram on the right).
Both the right- and the left-ventricles
have thick muscular walls. However, as the left ventricle must work
harder than the right
ventricle in order to maintain the same (i.e. a
constant)
rate of blood flow through the heart, the muscular wall of the left ventricle
is considerably thicker than that of the right ventricle. The left ventricle receives blood
from the pulmonary
vein via the left
atrium (and the bicuspid
valve), then pumps it into the aorta.
