Stratum Corneum

The Stratum Corneum is a layer of skin located within the epidermis.
(The skin is also known as the "integument", or "integumentary system").

More specifically, the stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the skin and consists of approx. 30 layers of dead cells. The cytoplasm that was in these cells has been replaced by keratin (which is a type of protein).
These cells are sometimes referred to as keratinocytes
