Sartorius

The sartorius muscles are located in each of the legs and are the longest muscles in the human body.

To test your knowledge: look at the image opposite and decide which muscle(s) you think are the sartorius muscles, then click on the image to check if you were correct - and for the labels of all the other muscles illustrated.

Further information about the sartorius is summarised below:

Point(s) of Origin:

Anterior superior iliac spine (of the iliac bone).

Point(s) of Insertion:

Upper medial tibial shaft (on the tibia bone)..

Action(s):

Flexes (bends) the hip and knee;
Outwardly rotates and abducts the hip;
Inwardly rotates the knee.

This may be particularly interesting study/revision material for students following courses in massage and similar bodywork therapies because these generally require a good basic knowledge of the muscular structures of the body.
