| The psoas major is a deep
muscle located at the front (anterior) of the body between the lower
vertebrae and the femur.
For illustration of location of the psoas major,
see the page about Anterior
Muscles, which can also be reached by clicking on the image opposite.
Further information about the psoas major is
summarised below:
Point(s) of Origin:
|
Vertebrae: T12 - L4/5
(transverse processes, vertebral
bodies, and discs of these vertebrae).
|
Point(s) of Insertion:
|
Lessor trochanter of the femur.
|
Action(s):
|
Flexes (bends) the hip.
Also an important stabilising muscle of the lower back; operates
in conjunction with the quadratus lumborum.
|
This may be particularly interesting study/revision material for students
following courses in Massage, Reflexology and
similar courses because these generally require a good basic knowledge
of the muscular structures of the arms, legs, hands and feet.
