Chemosis

Chemosis is a term that refers to swelling (oedema) of the conjunctiva of the eye.
If the conjunctiva becomes very swollen, the eye/s may not close properly.

Possible causes include inflammation (inflammation of the conjuctiva is called conjunctivitis) which is the most common, or blockages obstructing drainage of blood or lymph from around the eye. It can also be caused or exaccerbated by allergic reaction, viral infection, or excessive rubbing of the affected eye/s.
