Aphakia is the medical term used to describe
the absence of the lens
from an eye.
The lens may be missing for various reasons, e.g. surgical removal (as
may be performed during cateract
surgery), a perforating wound or ulcer, or it may be congenital (that
is the condition present at birth).
Treatments for aphakia may involve the prescription
and use of spectacles or contact lenses or by implant of an artificial
lens (pseudophakia).
