Eales' disease

Eales' disease is also known as

  • Angiopathia Retinae Juvenilis,
  • Periphlebitis Retinae,
  • Primary Perivasculitis of the Retina, and
  • Idiopathic Retinal Periphlebitis.

(These synonyms are mentioned for information but are not necessarily included as separate entries in this glossary. Where multiple entries are included the synonym text links to them.)

Eales' disease is a disorder of the retina of the eye characterised by inflammation of the blood vessels of the retina and leakage from abnormal growths of new blood vessels (abnormal growth of new blood vessels is called neovascularization). Eales' disease may be described as a form of vasculitis (i.e. inflammation of blood vessels) affecting the blood vessels of the retina.

Eales' disease generally affects healthy young adults more than other age-groups, the most common age of onset of symptoms being in the range 20-30 years, though some sources report a higher mean age of onset in the USA. Many (but not all) sources indicate that more men are diagnosed than women. This condition occurs throughout the world but is thought to be most prevalent on the Indian subcontinent.

Eales' disease is named after British Physician, Henry Eales (1852 - 1913).
