Sphincterotomy

The term Sphincterotomy has two medical meanings, one of which concerns an
ophthalmic procedure
. They are:

  1. Non-ophthalmic definition:
The term sphincterotomy can be used to refer to the surgical division (i.e. cutting/parting) of any sphincter muscle (that is, a specialized ring of muscle that surrounds an orifice such as the anus). In this case, a sphincterotomy usually involves only partial, rather than complete, division of the muscle.
  2. Ophthalmic meaning:
In ophthalmology the term sphincterotomy refers to surgical removal of part of the iris of the eye.
