Phobia is another word for "fear" but more specifically refers to abnormal, extreme fears that can cause problems to those affected: Extreme fears can be debilitating because they can lead to mental and emotional distress, physical symptopms, and social impairment / disability.

There are many words for specific fears, some of which are also defined in the glossary section of this website.
