AMA applauds legislation to cover the uninsured
The American Medical Association (AMA) applauds legislation to cover the
uninsured.
Jeremy Lazarus, MD (AMA Board Member) said:
"
Covering the uninsured is a top priority for the American Medical Association.
We applaud efforts to expand health care coverage, and support Senators Bingaman
and Voinovich's introduction today of the Health Partnership Act, and Representatives
Baldwin, Price and Tierney's introduction of similar legislation, the Health
Partnership Through Creative Federalism Act.
_ Through the creation of state health care
expansion and improvement programs, this legislation would provide an opportunity
for states to experiment
with innovative approaches and evaluate their ability to decrease the number
of uninsured, increase quality, and decrease health care costs. The freedom
for states to test different models for improving coverage can lead to broader
national solutions to cover the uninsured.
_ The uninsured live sicker and die younger
than the rest of Americans, and action is desperately needed. We look forward
to working with Congress
to extend health care coverage to more Americans through this legislation,
as well as other, more expansive federal initiatives.
_ The AMA has a three-pillar plan to cover
the uninsured through income-based federal tax credits, insurance market
reforms,
and the expansion of patient
choice in coverage. "
