Launch of new Gender Violence and Health Centre - London
A new centre for gender violence and health is being launched on 14 November
at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
The Centre, funded by the Sigrid Rausing Trust, will aim to improve the health
and well-being of women and girls around the world through action-oriented
research on the extent, causes and consequences of gender violence, and on
effective strategies for change.
Professor Charlotte Watts, Sigrid Rausing Chair in Gender Violence and Health
and Director of the Centre, said:
" The connections between violence against
women and poorer health outcomes are increasingly being recognised both by
medical and public health practitioners, and by the women's and human rights
communities.
_ The Gender Violence and Health Centre will
work with local and international partners to explore the implications of gender
violence for health and development
activities, and to inform the development of interventions aimed at addressing
and responding to gender violence around the world. We are very grateful to
the Sigrid Rausing Trust for funding this Centre, and enabling this important
work to go forward."
Speakers at the event will include Professor Andy Haines, Director of the
London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Poonam Joshi, Gender Policy
Adviser, Amnesty International UK, Claudia Garcia-Moreno, Co-ordinator, Gender
HIV/AIDS & Violence, World Health Organization and Professor Charlotte
Watts, Sigrid Rausing Chair in Gender Violence & Health.
