Turpentine is a fluid (liquid or gas) composed of chemicals
called terpenes. The main components of turpentine are
the monoterpenes alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. It is sometimes
known colloquially as just turps, though this also often refers to turpentine
substitute (or mineral turpentine), which is commonly used for cleaning
- especially cleaning paint brushed that have used used to apply oil-based
paints. Turpentine is used in paint stripper.
Because turpentine (or "turps") is an organic
solvent, it is considered as hazardous to health as other similar
chemicals. For example, it can burn the skin and eyes, damage the lungs
and respiratory system, damage the central nervous system if inhaled,
and cause kidney failure if ingested, among other things. It is also highly
flammable.
