The subscapular fossa of the scapula bone is:
- the concave depression
("fossa" = "shallow depression")
- located on the anterior = costal surface of the scapula bone only
So you won't find it labelled on diagrams of the posterior = dorsal surface of the scapula!
The subscapular fossa extends over a large area of the costal surface of the scapula bone (as shown on the right); diagrams such as that against the pink background below only indicate an example of a single point within the subscapular fossa.
Several ridges extend from the medial border into the smoother lateral area of the subscapular fossa.
Different areas, including the ridges, within the subscapular fossa form points of attachment of several muscles including the subscapularis and the serratus magnus. |
