A stratum (pl. strata)
is a layer, hence in the context of the skin, a stratum is a layer of
skin.
(The skin is also known as the "integument",
or "integumentary
system").
More specifically, a stratum (of skin) is a layer of tissue or layer/s
of cells. Examples include the stratum
corneum, stratum
lucidum, stratum
granulosum,
stratum
germinativum,
(which is also known as the “Malpighian
Layer”), stratum
spinosum and the stratum
basale.
