Regulator

The term regulator is sometimes used to refer to therapeutic agents (e.g. natural substances such as herbs, oils, or essences, or conventional pharmaceutical drugs) that help to balance the functions od the body so that they operate harmoniously. Note that specific agents may regulate specific bodily functions.

The other important meaning of the term regulator is to refer to an official (usually a government run and funded) organisation that controls an industry and protects consumers by maintaining minimum standards across that industry.

The term regulator is commonly understood in spoken English but is not a strictly medical term and does not appear in all medical/biological dictionaries.
