Rectus Abdominus

The rectus abdominus is a superficial muscle located at the front (anterior) of the body.

For illustration of location of the rectus abdominus, see the page about Anterior Muscles, which can also be reached by clicking on the image opposite.

Further information about the rectus abdominus is summarised below:

Point(s) of Origin:

Crest of the pubic bone.

Point(s) of Insertion:

Cartilage of the 5th to the 7th ribs, and also the xiphoid process (also known as the "xiphoid cartilage", this is located at the lowest section of the sternum or "breastbone").

Action(s):

Flexes (bends) the trunk or "torso" of the body.

This may be particularly interesting study/revision material for students following courses in Massage, Reflexology and similar courses because these generally require a good basic knowledge of the muscular structures of the arms, legs, hands and feet.
