Germicidal

The term germicidal refers to therapeutic agents (e.g. natural substances such as herbs, oils, or essences, or conventional pharmaceutical drugs) that kill germs such as bacteria and other micro-organisms.

Some dictionaries define germicidal as destroying specifically disease-causing micro organisms.

The meaning of the term germicidal is easily remembered from its form:

  • The -cidal part of the word refers to the fact that this agent kills/destroys something,
    and
  • the germ- part of the word indicates that the something it kills is "germs".
