E203

E203 is a food additive approved by the European Union (EU) and is used as an antifungal and antibacterial synthetic preservative in food products.

E203 is also known by the common name calcium sorbate, and by the chemical name (E,E)-hexa-2,4-dienoate.

E203 is made from the neutralisation of Sorbic acid and is therefore the calcium salt of Sorbic acid. No adverse effects have been found from E203. The preservative originates naturally in the European Mountain-ash (Sorbus aucuparia)

Examples of food/drink products that may include E203:
Dairy products, rye bread, frozen pizzas, dessert sauces, dried apricots, fruit salads, gelatine capsules and sweets.
