E174

E174 is a natural metal food additive approved by the European Union (EU).
It is used as a colouring agent in food and drink products.

The common name for E174 is Silver.

E174 is silver/grey colouring for food products. This metal is also used in photography, batteries, and for the more obvious uses in jewellery and silverware. E174 can be derived from crushed silver bearing ore.

Frequent and prolonged exposure to the dust form of silver may cause argyria (permanent staining of the eyes and skin, especially the nose and throat), as well as causing eye damage. Use of silver as a food colouring is banned in Australia.

Examples of food/drink products that may include E174:
Cake decorations and confectionary.
