E131

E131 is a food additive approved by the European Union (EU).
It is used as a synthetic colouring agent in food and drink products.

The common name for E131 is Patent Blue V.

E131 is highly soluble in water and gives a blue colouring.

Some allergic reactions have been reported in conjunction with the intake of E131. Other side effects have included low blood pressure, nausea and skin irritation. This colouring is banned in the US, Norway and Australia.
