E128 is a food additive approved by the European Union
(EU).
It is used as a synthetic colouring agent in food and drink products.
The common name for E128 is Red 2G.
E128 gives a red colouration
to food products. It is highly soluble in water and tends
to be used in meat and confectionary products.
In some cases, E128 has been found to be converted
to aniline in the gut.
E128 is suspected by some of being mutagenic
and has been known to cause anaemia, due to the production of aniline. E128 is
banned in Australia, as well as many other countries, but is permitted
in food
products in the UK. Although, the use of E128 has
been restricted and the ADI (Allowed Daily Intake) has been lowered.
