for further information about each.) |
Carbon Monoxide is chemical compound (chemical formula
CO), that is a colourless, odorless, tasteless, flammable and highly toxic
gas at room temperature. It is a product of the incomplete combustion
of carbon and carbon-containing compounds. (Complete combustion of carbon
and carbon-containing compounds results in the formation of carbon dioxide
CO2 as opposed to CO.) Carbon monoxide from
vehicular and manufacturing / industrial processes is a dangerous pollutant
thought to contribute to the greenhouse effect and global warming. It
is also a constituent of tobacco smoke.
Carbon monoxide gas is highly toxic and therefore life-threatening,
both to humans and other air-breathing animals. Inhaling even relatively
small amounts can lead to hypoxic injury, neurological damage, and possibly
death. Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include drowsiness
and headache, followed by unconsciousness, respiratory failure, and death.
