Axis

The axis bone is located in the neck and is significant because it is the second upper-most vertebra.
(It is therefore obvious in the upper of the two diagrams to the right - it is shown immediately to the left of the hyoid bone.)

Location:
The second vertebra, immediately below the atlas bone.

Function(s):
Allows rotation of the head.
