What is Pathology ?

Pathology is the study of disease processes - with emphasis on understanding the nature and causes of diseases.

Clinical Pathology is the treatment of patients who have diseases using the knowledge acquired through pathological studies, e.g. studies in laboratories using blood samples, urine samples, faeceal samples, tissue samples etc..

More about Pathology:

A medical specialist in the field of pathology is called a pathologist. The adjective used to refer to matters relating to or arising from disease is "pathological".

For example, a "pathological fracture" is a fracture to a bone that has been caused by the bone being diseased or otherwise abnormal (e.g. by a mechanical force that would not have fractured an equivalent healthy bone).

See also our glossary entry for "Pathology" in the glossary section about "Medical Disciplines".
